I didn’t set out to become an interior designer.

The interest started much earlier—with a natural desire to create spaces that felt personal, welcoming, and intentional.

Then life became the classroom.

Buying and selling homes taught me how to refine my process. Building a home gave me the opportunity to work directly with builders, subcontractors, and finish selections. And over time, those experiences evolved into something much bigger.

Today, my work has grown beyond interiors into construction management and strategic design.

Looking back, the path wasn’t a perfectly mapped-out career plan.

It was a series of experiences that built on one another.

Sometimes your career doesn’t appear all at once. You build it by following what you’re naturally good at—and staying open to where it leads.

A beautiful kitchen can still be frustrating to use if the flow doesn’t work.

When designing a kitchen, I don’t just look at the room as one space. Each working area—whether it’s the main kitchen, a butler’s nook, or a prep station—needs to function as its own workspace.

That means looking at the kitchen from the perspective of the person actually using it:

Where are you storing food?
Where are you prepping?
Where are you washing?
Where are you cooking?
And how easily can you move between those points?

Establishing the right working triangle helps create a kitchen that functions efficiently instead of simply looking good.

Because before you invest in finishes, appliances, or cabinetry, you need to understand how the space will actually live.

Good kitchen design starts with flow.

A better kitchen doesn’t always require more square footage. It requires a better plan.

For this renovation, we’re rethinking how every inch works—opening up the cabinetry, improving natural light, relocating the cooktop and refrigerator, and transforming the existing laundry space into a large walk-in pantry.

Good design isn’t just about what looks beautiful in the rendering. It’s about knowing what will actually work once the project is built.

In this kitchen, we’re looking at everything from vent hood styles and lighting details to ways of keeping a large wall from feeling visually heavy.

But then there’s the Pinterest idea.

A power strip integrated into the cabinetry might look great—but if the installation doesn’t meet code, it can create a much bigger problem later, especially when it’s time to sell.

I think entrepreneurs are wired a little differently.

We don’t really know how to not see opportunity. 😂

We walk into a room and see potential.
Look at a business and see what could be better.
See a problem and immediately start figuring out how to solve it.

We eat, sleep and breathe ideas, strategy, growth and the never-ending question of:

“But what if we did it this way?”

Slightly exhausting? Absolutely.

But it’s also one of the greatest strengths we bring to our clients.

Because we’re not interested in simply making something look good and moving on.

We want to know: Does it work? Does it make sense? Is this the best use of the investment? What could this become?

That entrepreneurial mindset is baked into Return on Design.

We see design through the eyes of a designer, an investor and a business owner—which means we’re always looking for the opportunity behind the decision.

Maybe entrepreneurs don’t know any better.

Before you walk through the front door, the property is already telling you a story.

When evaluating a potential investment, I like to start by looking at how the property has been maintained.

Look at the yard. Is it cared for, or is it overgrown with weeds?
Look at the structure. Do you see anything obvious that stands out?
Look at the roof. Does it appear smooth and maintained, or are there visible signs of damage?
And don’t overlook drainage. Standing water or poor grading can point to bigger issues.

None of these observations replaces a professional inspection—but they can give you valuable clues about what you may be walking into.

The condition you can see can help you ask better questions about what you can’t see.

When you’re buying property, don’t just look at the potential.

Look at the evidence.

On a large-scale project, the design is only one piece of the puzzle.

Behind the finished space is a constant coordination of people, materials, timelines, vendors, subcontractors, logistics, and countless moving parts.

And they all have to work together.

The challenge isn’t simply managing what’s happening today. It’s anticipating what needs to happen next so the entire project keeps moving forward.

Just as important is managing the client experience.

When so much of the work happens behind the scenes, clients may not always see the progress—but they should feel confident that their project is being handled.

That requires communication, organization, leadership, and the ability to zoom out and see the entire picture while managing the details.

Because great design doesn’t execute itself.

It takes the right people, the right systems, and someone who can keep all the pieces moving in the same direction.
